Johann Gottfried Galle's significance lies in his role in the discovery of Neptune, which is widely regarded as a dramatic validation of celestial mechanics and one of the most remarkable moments of 19th-century science. Galle always refused to be acknowledged as the discoverer, attributing the discovery to Le Verrier. Beyond Neptune, Galle made other contributions: he discovered an inner dark ring of Saturn, three comets, and published over 200 works on planetary orbits, aurorae, meteors, Earth's magnetic field, and climatology.
